Work with local and independent newsrooms

For journalism students, freelancers and jobseekers: Looking for journalism work, work experience or opportunities to build your portfolio? Local and independent newsrooms offer a chance to report on the communities they know best, build practical skills and develop your journalism career.

Looking for work?

Local and independent newsrooms vary widely in size and structure. Some employ journalists and editors, while others work with freelancers, contributors, interns and volunteers.

If you’re interested in working with a particular newsroom, the best approach is often to contact them directly. Introduce yourself, explain what you’re looking for and include examples of your work where relevant.

Take a browse of our interactive map to see where LINA members are located, or view the full list of member newsrooms.

Internship coordination service

LINA has worked with several universities to help coordinated internships for journalism students. If you’re from a university looking to work with our members, get in touch to discuss!

Job listings

LINA doesn’t have a jobs board, but if you’re a publisher wanting to share a job advertisement we are happy to help share this with our network. Get in touch.

Opportunities and resources

Know Your Neighbour

A LINA program supporting young people aged 15–25 to develop journalism, networking and digital content skills with local newsrooms in their communities. The program gives participants the opportunity to work with an experienced newsroom, develop practical skills and tell stories that reflect the diversity of their community. Young participants complete training, receive mentorship from their local newsroom, and are supported and paid to have their work published.

Newsroom Starter Kit

Practical resources for people interested in starting, running or growing a local or independent news service.

Improve your journalism skills with one of our three on-demand training courses, covering media law, interview skills and audio editing. These are perfect for experienced journalists needing a refresh, or for emerging journalists or interns.
