HR for newsrooms

Whether you’re preparing to hire your newsroom’s first journalist, or working with a large team of staff, HR can be a difficult realm to navigate. Here are some resources LINA provides to help problem-solve, address challenges, and set up strong HR policies to create a supportive and productive working environment.

On-demand HR support

LINA has partnered with Nurture HR Consulting to provide on-demand support to publishers for the management of personnel, employed, voluntary and/or freelance. This service is available free for members on an ad hoc basis, whenever you have a question and want some best practice advice.

Types of HR Support

  • Single issue query — free on an ad hoc basis. E.g. pay rates, obligations to volunteers, risk mitigation measures.
  • Multiple issue query — audit territory. E.g. succession planning, organisational structure review.

HR Audit

Sometimes it helps to step back and be a bit strategic about how we’re managing our teams – both people and processes. This might include thinking about business structure and succession planning, building up casuals into ongoing roles, change management as we adopt new technologies or focus’, advice on how to get the best from our staff, or even just having someone take a look at your administrative processes from an HR point of view and identify where and how you could potentially make things less time consuming for managers.

A HR audit can be a lot of things and LINA can offer limited subsidies to help access expertise to guide this process for you. Use the HR Help Request form to request an audit.
